The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Thursday.

--The Zambian government said it has removed 20,000 ghost farmers from a government subsidized input program in its efforts to rid the system of unscrupulous people who were benefiting from the initiative meant to support smallholder farmers.

Minister of Agriculture Dora Siliya said the ghost farmers have been removed from the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP) after a clean-up exercise conducted by her ministry in order to ensure that the program benefits real smallholder farmers. (Zambia Daily Mail)

--Zambia's tax agency has sued an opposition leader for defamation after he accused the agency of dubiously awarding a contract to a Chinese company.

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has sued Savior Chishimba, leader of the United People's Party (UPP) following his allegations that the tax agency dubiously and by corrupt means awarded a contract for the design, supply, delivery, installation, supervision, configuration, testing and commissioning of an invoice management system to a Chinese firm.(Times of Zambia)

--The Zambian government says it is not ready and has no intention of holding any dialogue meeting with the country's leading opposition political party until it recognizes President Edgar Lungu as winner of last year's election.

Chief Government Spokesperson Kampamba Mulenga while acknowledging that the government has an open door policy noted that it will only entertain the United Party for National Development when it recognizes Lungu's government. (Daily Nation)

--Plans by some section of society to form a splinter association to represent lawyers after accusing the current one of being partisan will only result in the proliferation of quack lawyers in the country, one of the country's top lawyers and former justice minister has said.

Wynter Kabimba, who was justice minister under late President Michael Sata's government, said he was not for the idea of forming other law associations, adding that it will make enforcement of discipline amongst lawyers difficult. (The Mast) Endit
