Landslide kills 3 in Indian-controlled Kashmir

At least three people including an infant girl were killed and seven others injured Monday after being hit by a landslide in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The landslide triggered near Drabshalla area of mountainous Kishtwar district, about 231 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Today on Doda-Kishtwar highway near Drabshalla, a landslide hit a group of people while they were crossing the road on foot," a senior police official told Xinhua. "Two people were killed on the spot and a month-old infant succumbed at hospital."

According to police seven others who were injured in the incident were being treated at a medical facility.

Officials said the road was last week damaged due to a landslide. The impediment hampered movement of vehicular traffic on road, forcing people to cross the damaged part on foot.

Last month, two young girls were killed in the district after being hit by a landslide. The girls had gone to graze their cattle when they came under a landslide.

Indian-controlled Kashmir has a rugged terrain. Landslides are often triggered from its mountains during frequent rains. Endit
