Afghan troops kill 4 IS militants in eastern province

Xinhua, April 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

Four Islamic State (IS) militants were killed after Afghan Special Forces waged an operation in restive eastern province of Nangarhar, said a military statement on Monday.

"Four Daesh (Arabic acronym for IS) militants were killed as Special Operation Forces carried out an offensive in Achin District, Nangarhar province Sunday," said the command of Afghan Special Forces in the statement posted on its official Facebook page.

The mountainous province with Jalalabad city as its capital, 120 km east of Kabul, has been the scene of clashes between security forces and IS militants since the emergence of IS there in early 2015.

In addition, the Special Forces also detained one weapons facilitator of the IS group in Jalalabad city, according to the statement.

The Afghan security forces have beefed up security operations against militants recently, as spring and summer known as fighting season, are drawing near in the Central Asian country.

The Afghan Special Operation Forces have eliminated 415 terrorists and detained 131 others across the country besides destroying narcotics estimated around 20.5 million U.S. dollars since early February this year, the statement reads.

They have also freed 32 civilians from militants' custody over the same period. Enditem
