Flood-hit schools shut down in Namibia

Xinhua, March 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

Floods caused by heavy rains have forced seven schools in the northern region of Namibia to close down and some villages abandoned.

Regional councils had to relocate pupils and teachers Thursday when the water that has been rising since Monday had overwhelmed buildings.

Both the pupils and villagers have been housed in tents on higher ground.

The affected schools are in the Omusati and Ohangwena regions where, according to the weather bureau received the highest rainfall of 94.4mm.

A constituency councilor, Laurentius Iipinge, said they have also relocated more than 130 villagers whose homes have been submerged in water.

According to Iipinge, apart from the seven schools that have been forced to close Wednesday and Thursday, three other schools could close in the next few days. Endit
