JSE trades firmer on Thursday

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed firmer on Thursday.

The all-share index closed 0.41 percent stronger at 51,893.19 points, while the Top 40 index was 0.36 percent up at 44 836.9 points. The Resources index, which made a strong run on Wednesday, gained 0.08 percent and the Industrial index was 0.16 percent higher.

Financial shares were the busiest on the JSE and Standard Bank, FirstRand, and Rand Merchant Insurance Holdings were among the top five shares in terms of trading volume.

Banks, which led the local market, were up by 2.91 percent while financials gained 1.19 percent. Gold miners were 0.79 percent firmer.

Standard Bank traded 6.54 percent higher at R155.95. FirstRand was 2.16 percent stronger at R51.47 and Barclays Africa lost 1.81 percent to R154.

Diversified miners were mixed with BHB Billiton adding 1.18 percent to R219.53. Glencore added 0.74 percent to R54.5, but Anglo American lost 1.13 percent to R207.77.

British American Tobacco was up 0.26 percent to R827.92 and Richemont dropped 0.12 percent to R94.24. Endit
