Number of visitors to Malta up by 21.8 pct in January

The number of inbound visitors to Malta for January 2017 saw an increase of 21.8 percent year-on-year, Malta's National Statistics Office confirmed on Wednesday.

Total inbound visitors for January were estimated at 104,069. Tourists from European Union member states totaled 90,541, up 27.4 percent when compared with January 2016.

Total nights spent by visitors went up by 12.3 percent when compared with the same period last year.

The largest share of guest nights was spent in collective accommodation establishments, accounting for 57.4 percent.

Tourist nights in private accommodation also saw an increase of 26.9 percent when compared with January 2016.

Total tourist expenditure was estimated at 70.8 million euros (75 million U.S. dollars), up 8.6 percent from the corresponding month in 2016. Endit
