Fewer driving permits revoked by Swiss authorities last year: report

Xinhua, March 1, 2017 Adjust font size:

The Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) reported Tuesday that some 78,000 driving licences were confiscated by authorities in Switzerland last year, 2,133 fewer than in 2015.

As in previous years, most licenses were revoked by Swiss law enforcement either for speeding or for driving under the influence.

Indeed, figures reveal that 29,226 individuals had their licences revoked because of breaking the speed limit, while 15,084 lost their driving permits because of driving under the influence of alcohol.

While the number of such offenses decreased last year, FEDRO revealed that the number of licenses confiscated because of driving while distracted increased.

According to FEDRO statistics, 1,693 people were found guilty of driving while either eating, using the telephone or another distractive activity, up 7.3 percent from two years ago.

A further 5,680 driving licences were rescinded because of a driving-inaptitude linked to an underlying illness or physical impairment. Enditem
