Kenya's bourse closes week on high as turnover, key index rise

Turnover at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) rose 204 percent to close the week Friday on a high as the benchmark 20 share index similarly sustained gains after crossing the 3,000 points mark.

Some 46 million shares valued at 9.6 million U.S. dollars were traded at the bourse during the session, up from 13 million worth 3.1 million dollars.

Safaricom was the day's traded stock after moving 32 million shares at unchanged price of 0.17 dollars. Thursday, the leading telecom traded a paltry 6 million shares.

Coming in second was Kenya Commercial Bank with 6.7 million shares at unchanged price of 0.25 dollars while KenolKobil was third with 1.8 million shares at 0.13 dollars.

NIC Bank and Barclays Bank were in the fourth and fifth positions respectively, moving 1.7 and 1.6 million shares after going up 6 percent and 1.6 percent.

Prices of most of the shares, in particular the top stocks, however remained flat in the session that foreign investors were net buyers, with participation standing at 79 percent.

All the market indicators registered positive gains. The NSE 20 share Index gained 14 points during the session and 74.32 points in the week to stand at 3,023.07.

All share Index (NASI) was up to stand at 126.53 while the NSE 25 Share index added 48.24 points in the week to stand at 3,297.51 on Friday. Endit
