The police in Nigeria Wednesday confirmed the kidnapping of a German archaeologist and his associate by gunmen at Jenjela village in northern Kaduna State.

The professor is the leader of a four-member team from the University of Frankfurt, Germany, working in Nigeria in collaboration with the National Commission for Museum and Monuments and other institutions on the relics of Nok culture in Nigeria.

The two female members of the team were not taken by the abductors.

Kaduna state police spokesperson Aliyu Usman said the police and villagers had swung into action to rescue the victims.

"Yes, I have confirmed the kidnap of the German archaeologist and his associate. The Anti-kidnap squad of the force, assisted by the villagers and the Special Force deployed by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for southern Kaduna are working toward rescuing the victims," he added.
