Unknown gunmen on Wednesday abducted a German archaeologist and his associate in Nigeria's northern Kaduna State, an eyewitness said.

The professor is the leader of a four-member team from the University of Frankfurt, Germany, working in Nigeria in collaboration with the National Commission for Museum and Monuments and other institutions on the relics of Nok culture in Nigeria.

The two femal members of the team were not taken by the abductors.

An eyewitness who was part of the team working in collaboration with Germans, said the incident happened when they resumed work at a site in Jenjela village when five gun men appeared from the bush and ordered them to lie down.

The eyewitness said the matter has been reported to the police at Kagarko.

State police spokesperson Usman Aliyu said he would get in touch with Kagarko, where the incident took place, to confirm the circumstances. Endit
