Lithuanian tycoon offers 1 mln euros for state's founding document

Xinhua, February 16, 2017 Adjust font size:

One of the largest business groups in Lithuania has offered on Wednesday a 1 million euro (1.06 million U.S. dollars) reward for the original Lithuanian Act of Independence signed 99 years ago.

MG Baltic, a group of companies, controlled by multi-millionaire Darius Mockus, on Wednesday launched a one-year initiative to find the lost original of Lithuania's Act of Independence.

The document which comprises the constitutional foundation of the state of Lithuania was signed on Feb. 16, 1918.

The initiative comes with one year left to celebrations marking the 100-year anniversary of the Baltic state. With the date approaching, MG Baltic wants to end the prolonged story, said the group.

"I know that there are at least six different versions about disappearance of the document and its whereabouts," Mockus was quoted as saying in a press release.

The businessman said the amount of money is adequate to "the level of risk and possible costs." Endit
