Kyrgyzstan sets presidential election date in November

Xinhua, February 15, 2017 Adjust font size:

The presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan are scheduled to be held on Nov. 19, the president's press service said Wednesday.

The date was set during a meeting of President Almazbek Atambayev with chairwoman of the Central Commission for Elections, Nurzhan Shaildabekova.

At the meeting Atambayev stressed the importance of the presidential elections, pledged to eliminate all shortcomings and omissions, and ensure a fully open and fair election.

"Only free and fair elections provide legitimacy and ensure stability in the country," he said.

Atambayev's presidential term ends this December.

Early presidential elections were held in Kyrgyzstan on Oct. 30, 2011 to replace Interim President Roza Otunbayeva.

The election followed the 2010 Kyrgyzstan riots, during which the incumbent President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted by protesters and an interim government led by Roza Otunbayeva was formed.

Under the new constitution, the presidential term is six years, and relection is barred.

So far, three candidates have already officially declared their intention to run for the presidency, including former Prime Minister Temir Sariev, leader of the Respublika-Ata-Jurt faction of the Kyrgyz Parliament Omurbek Babanov and leader of the Onuguu Progress faction Bakyt Torobaev. Endit
