430 workers laid off as Siemens closes Danish blade factory

Xinhua, February 15, 2017 Adjust font size:

Siemens has decided to close its wind turbine blade factory in Denmark's Engesvang and lay off all of its 430 employees, local media reported Wednesday.

Michael Hannibal, the CEO for offshore wind at Siemens Wind Power, said the blades on the markets were growing faster than anticipated and there was not enough demand for the blades manufactured in the factory, according to Danish news agency Ritzau.

Hannibal explained that larger blades cannot be manufactured in the factory as it can not be expanded.

However, Siemens' two other factories in Brande and Aalborg will maintain their production, Ritzau reported.

After the closure of the plant, Siemens will employ a total of 8,000 people in Denmark, including 6,500 in the wind turbine business. Endit
