Cyprus's former deputy attorney-general found guilty on corruption charges

Cyprus's former deputy attorney-general Rikkos Erotokritoy was found guilty on Wednesday on several charges of corruption, bribery, conspiracy to defraud, and conspiracy to subvert the course of justice.

Erotokritou and two lawyers who also faced charges in the same case could be sentenced to a maximum of seven years in prison.

A three-member Assize Court said after issuing a reserved judgment that it would sit again on Feb. 17 to hear mitigation pleas by defense attorneys before handing down sentences.

Erotokritou was found guilty of receiving a bribe, abuse of power, corruption, and conspiracy.

Lawyers Andreas Kyprizoglou and Panayiotis Neocleous, as well as the Neocleous law firm in Limassol, were found guilty on charges of conspiracy to defraud, bribery, and corruption.

In its ruling, the court recounted how the four had arranged for Erotokritou to use his post to launch criminal proceedings against five Russian individuals and one company, at the behest and to the benefit of the Neocleous law firm. Endit
