Namibian power firm not to cut supply to indebted villages

Xinhua, February 9, 2017 Adjust font size:

Villages and local councils that owe the Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower) millions of dollars have been spared darkness after the power utility's board decided not to switch off power.

Last week, NamPower threatened to cut off power supply on Feb. 8 to various villages and local councils that owed more than 46 million Namibian dollars (3.4 million U.S. dollars).

Responding to the threats, some villages and local councils paid about 17 million Namibian dollars.

In a statement Wednesday, NamPower said the board decided not to suspend power supply to the affected villages, municipalities and regional councils after most of them responded positively by paying their accounts and making the necessary arrangements to settle them.

"NamPower will continue to engage the customers to settle their outstanding balances in due course or to make alternative payment arrangements," the statement said. Endit
