High winds cause Celta- Madrid game to be cancelled

Xinhua, February 5, 2017 Adjust font size:

Sunday's Liga Santander game between Celta Vigo and Real Madrid was postponed on Saturday as a result of the high winds which are currently affecting the north of Spain.

Winds of up to 130 kilometers an hour tore 40 meters of covering from the roof of Celta's Balaidos Stadium causing the Mayor of Vigo to suspend the game "due to the possible risk to spectators."

The decision comes less than 24 hours after the game between Deportivo la Coruna and Betis also had to be suspended after winds damaged part of the roof in Deportivo's Riazor Stadium.

Meanwhile the north-west of Spain continues on red alert as a result of the high-winds, with the rest of the north coast on orange alert as a consequence of the storm, which has caused substantial damage to property and saw 12 fishermen rescued off the coast of Asturias when their boat went down in high seas.

In sporting terms the postponement of their game is a setback to Real Madrid, who will now have to find a space in the fixture calendar to play postponed matches against Valencia and Celta, while Celta will have the chance to rest players following Thursday's King's Cup semi-final against Alaves.
