A policeman early Thursday opened fire in a police agents' dormitory in the Burundian capital Bujumbura, injuring his eight colleagues before injuring himself with his gun, the Burundian police spokesman said.

"The incident happened around 2:00 a.m. early in the morning when policemen were sleeping in their dormitory at the Road Traffic Police. A policeman woke up, took his gun and opened fire in all directions, injuring eight policemen. Four of them were seriously injured. He then shot himself, but he was only injured," Burundian Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye said.

According to him, his colleagues indicated that the policeman had a "strange behavior" over past days, showing that he could have "mental" problems.

"Injured victims including that policeman who opened fire on them was taken to hospital and investigations have started to elucidate circumstances on the shooting," Nkurikiye said. Endit
