Ghana's Quartey elected vice chair of AU Commission

A leading Ghanaian career diplomat, Thomas Kwesi Quartey, was Monday elected as deputy chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Quartey, who was recalled from diplomatic duties to serve as Deputy Foreign Minister under the John Dramani Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, was elected during the 28th Assembly of the AU to serve as deputy to Chadian Foreign Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat who was elected as the new Chairperson of the AU Commission.

The diplomat, with 35 years' experience in diplomatic service, became Secretary to former Ghanaian President John Mahama, a position he held until January 7, 2017.

He had earlier worked at Ghana's missions in Cuba, Brussels, as well as Ghana's permanent mission in the United Nations in New York.

He also served as Director for Passports and Ghana's Deputy Head of Mission in London, Great Britain. Endit
