So wins Tata Steel Chess tournament

Wesley So won the 79th edition of the prestigious Tata Steel Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, on Sunday.

In the 13th and final round the 23-year-old chess player from the United States beat Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi with the black pieces. He finished with a total of nine points.

Five-time champion Magnus Carlsen from Norway, who won the tournament in 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2016, ended on 8 points on the second place. With the white pieces the current World Champion drew against Sergey Karjakin from Russia on Sunday.

The 17-year-old Chinese prodigy Wei Yi lost his last match against Radoslaw Wojtaszek from Poland and Armenian Levon Aronian, four-time winner of the tournament, also lost his final match against Dmitri Andreikin from Russia. The Chinese and Armenian player therefore had to settle for the joint third place with 7.5 points. Endit
