Irish police seize firearms, drugs in raid against crime gangs

Xinhua, January 30, 2017 Adjust font size:

Irish police said on Sunday they have seized guns, ammunition and up to 30 kg of heroin and cocaine in an operation targeting the organized crime gangs.

The operation was made on Saturday evening during the search of a house in County Kildare, about 50 km from Dublin.

An AK47 assault rifle and a quantity of ammunition were found during the operation, police said, adding that they uncovered 20 kg of cocaine and 10 kg of heroin, with estimated street value of 3 million euros.

The firearms and drugs were hidden in various rooms around the house, some within furniture, others in concealed compartments, according to police.

No arrests have yet been made, police said.

In a statement, Irish Tanaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald said Saturday evening's operation underlines again the fact that police are "being relentless and resourceful in tackling the menace of organized crime gangs." Endit
