The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Saturday.
-- Zambia requires about 1 million U.S. dollars to electrify 51 percent of its rural areas by 2030.
Energy Minister David Mabumba said that most of the rural areas were not connected to electricity and that government was working to improve the situation.
While 50 percent of Zambia's population is in rural areas, only 4.4 percent are connected to the national grid while 7.8 percent are connected through other means like solar power. (Times of Zambia)
-- The Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has resumed passenger train operations which were suspended last Friday following a work stoppage by unionized workers.
Passenger trains were suspended on the Zambian side after unionized workers went on strike to demand for immediate adjustment of the salary dollar-exchange parity rate..
But the railway firm, a joint venture between the governments of Zambia and Tanzania, said passenger trains have resumed following a consensus reached between the management and two workers' unions in Zambia after a meeting. (Zambia Daily Mail)
-- Zambian President Edgar Lungu said the country will lean towards regional decision in voting for the new African Union (AU) chairperson.
Lungu said this was in the interest of good neighborliness.
Lungu was speaking before departure for Ethiopia where he has gone to attend the 28th Session Ordinary Session of the assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU.(Daily Nation)
-- The Southern African Partnership for Democratic Change (SAPDC) has hailed west Africa's regional bloc for intervening to enforce the democratic will of the people of The Gambia.
The Gambia's longtime leader Yahya Jammeh refused to step aside after losing elections to opposition candidate Adama Barrow, resulting in the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) to intervene.
The SAPDC condemned Jammeh over his attempt to subvert the will of the people. (The Mast) Endit
