At least eight civilians were either killed or wounded on Wednesday by Turkish forces in the northeastern province of Hasakah, state news agency SANA reported.

The Turkish border guards opened fire randomly at a group of civilians in the town of Ghzail in the countryside of Hasakah, near the Turkish borders, killing two and injuring six others. (Turkish forces-Hasakah-Ghzail)

JERUSALEM -- Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian man after his car crashed at a bus stop in the West Bank on Wednesday, an army notice said.

A military spokesperson said the man attempted to carry out a car-ramming attack at night outside the Jewish settlement of Psagot, east of Jerusalem, before the soldiers opened fire, killing him at the scene. (Israel-Palestinian-Attack)

GENEVA -- Switzerland on Wednesday decided to extend until March 31 precautionary measures seeking to prevent the propagation of the H5N8 bird flu strain.

This step was taken in view of "the concerning situation in Europe, as well as low temperatures in Northern Europe" which increase wild bird migration, the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) said in a statement. (Switzerland-Flu-H5N8)

SOFIA -- Bulgarian President Rumen Radev signed a decree on the appointment of the country's caretaker government with effect from Friday, his press office said in a statement on Wednesday.

The caretaker government headed by Ognyan Gerdjikov, a law professor and former Speaker of the country's Parliament, will replace the GERB party-led coalition government that resigned in mid-November last year. (Bulgaria-President-Government)

NAIROBI -- More than 90 Somalis and Kenyans arrived in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Wednesday after being deported from the United States, a Kenyan official said.

Government spokesman Eric Kiraithe said the deported included 90 Somali men and two Kenyan women, while adding he did not know why they had been deported. (Kenya-Somali-Deport) Endi
