The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), headline sponsors of Ghana's Black Stars, on Monday charged the team to go for the ultimate at this year's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon.

In a statement issued ahead of Ghana's Group D opener against the Cranes of Uganda on Tuesday, the GNPC appealed to the team to win the trophy to end the country's 35 years trophy drought.

"We are confident that you are capable of becoming AFCON 2017 champions and therefore urge you to be united in focus for victory to crown your efforts," said the statement.

Over the weekend, Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo wished the team well and charged the players to go for gold.

"It's time to end our 34-year wait for the AFCON trophy. We can do it. Go for gold," Akufo-Addo said.

The 16-nation tournament runs from Jan.14 to Feb. 5, 2017 in four Gabonese cities. Endit
