Xinhua, January 15, 2017 Adjust font size:

A Spanish worker with the Red Cross, who was kidnapped in Afghanistan on Dec. 19 was freed on Sunday in the Kunduz and is "safe and sound," a regional government source confirmed to Spanish media.

The unnamed aid worker was kidnapped in northern Afghanistan's Kunduz province when he was travelling in a Red Cross convoy of two vehicles.

Regional Red Cross delegate Monica Zanarelli commented at the time of the kidnap that the organization was "extremely worried" about the safety of their "colleague," and was doing "everything possible" to ensure a safe release with no conditions attached.

The Afghan authorities have assured they are "following the appropriate protocols" for such cases.

Kunduz province, bordering Tajikistan, has been one of scenes of heavy clashes over the past couple of months as Taliban has been trying to challenge the government forces in the once relatively peaceful region. Endit
