Nigerian state to disinfect farms, markets to curb bird flu

Xinhua, January 14, 2017 Adjust font size:

Nigeria's northwest Kano State would soon begin disinfection of all poultry farms and markets as part of measures to curb the spread of the recent outbreak of bird flu, an official said Friday.

The state government had approved funds for procuring more disinfectants, Shehu Bawa, veterinary services director of the state's agricultural ministry, told reporters in Kano.

The director said the department had also stepped up surveillance in all markets to prevent people from selling infected birds to unsuspecting members of the public.

Bawa said the federal government had promised to pay all those farmers affected by the disease in 2014/2015 and 2015 /2016 periods.

More than 9,000 birds have so far been culled since the disease resurfaced in the state on Dec. 15. Endit
