Over 500 trucks marooned on Zambia-DR Congo border

Xinhua, January 7, 2017 Adjust font size:

Over 500 trucks were marooned at a border between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) after the drivers refused to enter the neighboring country due to security concerns, a Zambian official said Friday.

The drivers refused to enter DRC at the Kasumbalesa border in Zambia's Chililabombwe town on the Copperbelt Province after four trucks were damaged by some Congolese nationals.

The trucks, from various countries in southern Africa, have been marooned at the border since Monday, according to state broadcaster Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.

Paul Mulenga, Chililabombwe acting District Commissioner, said the drivers had vowed not to enter Congo until the security situation in that country improves.

He has since appealed to the government to intervene to ensure a smooth movement of goods and services between the two countries.

Copperbelt Minister Bowman Lusambo have promised to find a solution to the problem and expressed concern that business had come to a standstill due to the security situation. Endit
