Xinhua, December 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

The former head of anti-drug squad at the Helsinki Police Department was sentenced to ten years in prison for drug smuggling, official misconduct and other crimes on Thursday.

Jari Aarnio was allegedly involved in smuggling nearly 800 kg hashish from the Netherlands into Finland between 2011 and 2012, according to Finnish media reports.

He was also accused of disturbing and preventing other police officers from investigating the case during the period 2012-2013, reported Finnish national broadcaster Yle.

The Helsinki District Court convicted that Aarnio played a key role in the drug smuggling ring and found him guilty of six counts of aggravated drug offences and 16 other offences.

According to Finnish news agency STT, Aarnio denied all of the drug-related and official misconduct charges against him. His attorney said that he will appeal to the Helsinki Court of Appeal.

Aarnio has been under investigation for accepting bribes since November 2013. The investigation then broadened in December 2013 to cover possible drug shipments and suspected involvement in organized crime.

Earlier in September this year, Aarnio received a three-year prison sentence for corruption, as he had been convicted of aggravated fraud, aggravated bribe-taking and aggravated dereliction of duty. Endit
