4 children killed in house fire in Ukrainian capital

Xinhua, December 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

Four children have been killed and another one received burns in a house fire in the Ukrainian capital on Thursday, local authorities said.

The blaze broke out in a private two-storey house shortly after midday local time, when five children and their parents were inside, the State Service for Emergencies said in a statement.

Two adults have escaped the fire with minor burns, while a 12-year-old girl was rescued and hospitalized.

Four other children aged between 2 and 11 years were found dead inside the house after the blaze was extinguished.

The cause of the fire remained unknown, but the initial investigation suggested that careless handling of fire could be behind the blaze.

Shortly after the accident, the State Service for Emergencies said it is considering raising the penalties for violation of fire safety norms by 100-fold to about 633 U.S. dollars. Endit
