Nairobi bourse in slow start after Christmas holiday

Xinhua, December 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Some 9.4 million shares valued at 2.9 million U.S. dollars were traded at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) Wednesday on the first day of trading after the Christmas holiday.

Trading was slow, dropping from 3.7 million dollars on a volume of 17 million shares posted last week Friday before the bourse went on Christmas break.

Safaricom was the day's biggest mover as its 6.5 million shares exchanged hands at 0.19 dollars. In the previous session, the telecom traded 3.7 million shares.

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) was the second top trader moving 1 million shares at unchanged price of 0.28 dollars, down from 5.7 million shares in the previous session.

Save for Safaricom and KCB, the rest of the shares in the top five mover list did not trade more than a million shares.

Despite the low trading, a rise in the prices of several top stocks pushed up the indicative 20 share index 17.3 points to 3,130.93. Endit
