Kenya enhances border security amid terror threats

Xinhua, December 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Kenya's security agencies on Monday announced increased surveillance along the Kenya-Somalia border following report of impending attack during the festive season in the Coast town of Lamu.

Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa said Kenya Defence Force (KDF) and Kenya Navy are collaborating with other security agents to ensure peace of the festive season.

Marwa told journalists in Mombasa that the agents are determined to averting any attacks by Al-Shabaab militants.

"Some terrorist organizations who might attempt to sneak into the country to stage attacks will be met with the full force of law. We are well equipped to contain them even before they cross into the country," Marwa said.

Security forces have been on high alert after intelligence reports indicated that Al-Shabaab militants were planning attacks in the East African nation and other African countries that have sent soldiers to Somalia.

Police believe Jaysh Ayman, a faction of the Somali-based terror group that operates in Boni Forest, Lamu County, could be planning the attacks during the festivity.

Marwa said all passenger buses plying the Mombasa-Lamu highway have been advised to seek police escort during the festive season.

Marwa assured both locals and foreigners of adequate security during the festive season that has so far recorded good booking but urged everyone to be vigilant.

He said security has been heightened at key installations including shopping malls, beaches and government buildings that might be targeted during the festive season.

Hotels in Coast have recorded good business during the festive seasons compared to the previous two years, as the tourist sector slowly recovered following improved security in the country. Endit
