Azerbaijan strategically important for region: U.S. Transportation Commander

Azerbaijan is strategically important country for the region, the visiting US Transportation Commander, Air Force General Darren McDew told reporters here on Saturday.

The U.S. military official pointed out that it was his first visit to Azerbaijan. He said that his meetings with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the country's defense minister Zakir Hasanov mainly focused on long-term cooperation in security area between the United States and Azerbaijan.

"The world needs such countries as Azerbaijan," he said adding that over the 25 years of independence, Azerbaijan has become a strong partner.

"President of Azerbaijan is making efforts for the development of transport system. It is important for the economic development of both Azerbaijan and the entire world," he emphasized.

The U.S. General also touched upon the military trainings conducted by the United States for the Azerbaijani military officers.

Regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Mr. Darren McDew said that the United States fully support the peace process established by the The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group. Endit
