The population of Spain in the first six months of 2016 rose by 22,274 people, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on Friday.
The rise puts an end to a period of four years of a falling population, due to an aging population which resulted in more deaths than births, and the effects of the economic crisis which saw many immigrants return to their homelands and many Spaniards seek work abroad due to the lack of work in Spain.
The increased number of immigrants moving to Spain between January and June was 186,059, compared to the 155,555 who left the country, while the period recorded 205,836 deaths, compared to 197,606 births.
A total of 47,784 of those who left Spain during the first six months of the year were Spanish nationals seeking work abroad, mainly in Britain, France and Germany.
The study also showed that there were currently 686,911 Romanians in Spain, along with 668,852 Moroccans, 298,250 Britons, 196,746 Italians and 174,194 Chinese, with an increase in the numbers of Italians, Chinese, Britons and Ukrainians coming to the country in the past six months. Endit
