Tokyo shares close higher on soft yen, U.S. shares' rally

Tokyo shares closed higher Friday with the Nikkei index went up for the ninth straight session as the yen depreciated against the U.S. dollar, with positive cues also taken from rising U.S. shares overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 127.36 points, or 0.66 percent, from Thursday at 19,401.15.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 7.95 points, or 0.52 percent, higher 1,550.67.

Gainers were led by insurance, electricity and gas, and pulp and paper issues.

The day's turnover was about 2,908.2 billion yen (around 24.6 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
