Ukraine's road construction sees 10-fold increase in 2016: president

Ukraine has boosted the construction of roads by ten-fold this year in an attempt to bolster the infrastructure development, President Petro Poroshenko said on Wednesday.

"Building the roads not only allows us to create new jobs, but also contributes to the development of each region and Ukraine as a whole," Poroshenko told reporters during his visit to Ternopol region in western Ukraine.

The president has announced that next year, the government will assign at least 570 million U.S. dollars for the development of road infrastructure in addition to 542 million U.S. dollars already envisaged in the 2017 state budget.

According to Ukrainian traffic authorities, the East European country has about 170,000 kilometers of roads, with half of them are in need of major renewal.

In 2016, Ukraine has increased its spending for road construction and modernization by five-fold to 738 million U.S. dollars. The funding was designed to carry out the overhaul on more than 1,700 kilometers of roads. Endit
