S. African stocks close marginally weaker Wednesday

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed marginally weaker on Wednesday, with the all share index losing 0.24 percent to 50,716.25 points.

Financial shares declined by 0.4 percent, while gold had risen 0.41 percent to sell at 1,162.69 U.S. dollars an ounce.

At the close of the session, the South African Rand was trading at R13.65 to the U.S. dollar, R17.31 to the British pound and R14.52 to the euro.

The gold index added 2.88 percent, food and drug retailers 1.04 percent and platinums 0.66 percent. Banks dropped 0.8 percent and property fell 0.39 percent after good gains on Tuesday.

Anglo American was 1.49 percent lower at R209.39 after De Beers announced the smallest sale of diamond stones so far this year as demand was hurt in India.

British American Tobacco was 1.66 percent higher at R778.74.

Among gold stocks, Harmony lifted 4.5 percent to R29 and Sibanye was down 3.11 percent to R23.96.

FirstRand was 1.56 percent lower at R53.01. Endit
