Telecom fraudsters busted in Spain in joint Chinese, Spanish operation

Xinhua, December 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Spanish and Chinese police arrested "a group of telecom fraud suspects" in a joint operation in Spain on Tuesday, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Wednesday.

According to the MPS, police raided more than ten sites in Spain on Tuesday afternoon after months of investigation.

The suspects are alleged to have made phone calls impersonating Chinese law enforcement personnel and caused "significant losses" for people on the Chinese mainland.

The news came as authorities are raising awareness of cyber and telecom fraud.

Telecom fraud came to the fore in China in August after a case in which Xu Yuyu, an 18-year-old high school graduate in Shandong Province, died of cardiac arrest after losing her tuition fees to a fraudster. Endi
