Muhammad V takes throne as Malaysia's new king

Xinhua, December 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan was formally sworn in on Tuesday as Malaysia's 15th "Yang di-Pertuan Agong," or the king.

Muhammad V basked in a lavish welcome ceremony held at the parliament square in downtown Kuala Lumpur before he moved to the royal palace to formally take the oath of office as the head of state.

Under the special rotational monarchy system in Malaysia, a king is selected every five years from the nine hereditary sultans, called the conference of rulers. The new king succeeded Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, whose five-year tenure ended on Monday.

Muhammad V, 47, is currently the youngest among the nine ruling sultans.

The Sultan of Perak, Nazrin Shah, also took the oath of office as the deputy head of state on the same day. Enditem
