Eurozone employment up by 0.2 pct in Q3

Employment in the eurozone and the wider European Union (EU) increased by 0.2 percent during the third quarter compared with the previous quarter, statistics agency Eurostat said on Tuesday.

In the second quarter, employment rose by 0.4 percent in the euro area and by 0.3 percent in the EU. In the third quarter this year, employment increased by 1.2 percent in the euro area and by 1.1 percent in the EU compared with the same quarter of the previous year.

Eurostat estimates that there were 232.5 million people employed in the EU in the July to September quarter, the highest level ever recorded.

In the eurozone, there were 153.4 million people employed, the highest that figure has been since the fourth quarter of 2008.

Portugal recorded the highest increases in the third quarter at 1.3 percent in the third quarter compared with the previous three months.

The largest decreases in employment were recorded in Latvia, down 1.5 percent, and Estonia by 1 percent. Enditem
