Czech Defense Ministry starts forming "hackers" unit for cyber defense

Xinhua, December 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Czech Defense Ministry has started forming a "hackers" unit in charge of cyber defense, local media reported on Tuesday.

Named the National Centre of Cyber Forces, the agency will protect institutions such as power plants, banks and hospitals in the Czech Republic from online threats.

According to local media, a law on military intelligence service will need to be amended to establish the unit, but intelligence officers have started recruiting IT experts, mainly fresh university graduates beforehand.

In the beginning, the new unit will only focus on averting cyber attacks, and work towards being capable of returning them in a few years, Military Intelligence (VZ) chief Jan Beroun was quoted as saying.

VZ received about 300 million crowns (about 12 million U.S. dollars) to launch the unit. It currently has 20 IT experts, but has postponed the purchase of new equipment until the bill is passed. Enditem
