Tokyo shares open higher as investors bet on U.S. stimulus policy

Tokyo shares opened higher on Thursday following U.S. stock rallied overnight amid investors' bet that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump would adopt stimulus policies to accelerate economic growth.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 224.17 points, or 1.21 percent, from Wednesday to 18,720.86.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 18.46 points, or 1.24 percent, to 1,509.08.

Gainers were led by electric power and gas, insurance, and information and communication issues. Endit
