Young Latvian faces criminal prosecution for joining IS

Xinhua, December 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

A young man from a small town in western Latvia is facing criminal prosecution for traveling to Syria with intention to join the Islamic State (IS) group, the Latvian law enforcement authorities have said.

This is the first case of a Latvian national facing prosecution for involvement in the Syrian conflict.

Last week, the Latvian Security Police asked the prosecutor at the Riga judicial district to press charges against the suspect for unauthorized participation in the armed conflict in Syria.

In November 2015, the Security Police launched a criminal investigation against a young man from Latvia suspected of illegal involvement in an armed conflict in a foreign country.

In the summer 2016, the man was detained by Turkish authorities and extradited in September to Latvia where he was placed in custody. On Dec. 2, a Latvian court ruled to keep the suspect in custody. Endit
