Illegal cigarettes worth 2.25 mln USD seized on Poland's eastern border

Polish authorities have seized illegal cigarettes worth 9.5 million PLN (2.25 million U.S. dollars), which is the biggest number of illegal cigarettes seized in a single operation on Poland's eastern border with Belarus, local media reported Tuesday.

According to the Polish Press Agency, the agents seized nearly 718,000 packs of cigarettes worth 9.5 million PLN. If sold in Poland, the state treasury could have lost over 15 million PLN.

The illicit haul was concealed in three specially-adapted gas tanks carried by a freight train coming to Poland from Belarus. It was to cross the border with Poland in Kuznica, in northeastern Poland.

Cigarettes had previously usually been smuggled in trucks, the authorities added. Endit
