Austrian presidential election evokes mixed reactions

Xinhua, December 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

The results of the Austrian presidential election on Monday evoked mixed reactions across aisles.

Austria's presidential election is a clear sign for the continuation of a pro-European course, president of the Austrian Economic Chambers Christoph Leitl said Monday, according to an Austria Press Agency report.

Following the victory of Greens candidate Alexander Van der Bellen, Leitl said he is looking forward to "good cooperation in bringing Austria back to the top again."

Meanwhile, the leader of Austria's right-wing Freedom Party (FPO) Heinz-Christian Strache urged his supporters to remain positive despite Sunday's presidential election loss.

He urged supporters not to be discouraged. While the time was not yet ripe for "great success," history was still written on Sunday. He added that with such "tremendous trust the positive renewal of Austria, will not be able to be able to be stopped in 2017." Enditem
