Albania to toughen law against domestic crime: minister

Xinhua, December 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Albania needs to, and will, undertake legal changes to toughen the law against domestic violence, Albanian Minister of Social Welfare and Youth Blendi Klosi told reporters on Monday.

He made the statements after two small children, 4 and 6 years old, were found dead in their house in the city of Korca, southeast Albania, both killed by their father. In another incident two days earlier, a man threw his wife from the window, leaving her dead.

Such news has spurred strong debates concerning the efficiency of state institutions and organizations engaged in preventing and fighting domestic violence in Albania where the main victims are women and children.

Klosi said laws should get more severe and called on institutions such as police, courts and ministries to react and do more in this regard.

He criticized courts for issuing soft decisions against abusers, declaring that punishments should be harsher against men who use violence in their homes. Endit
