Swiss hotel stays register slight drop in summer: report

The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) said Monday that 20 million overnight stays were recorded in the confederation between May and October this year, down 0.2 percent from the same period in 2015.

According to figures, more than half of occupied hotel beds this summer were accounted for by foreigner visitors (11.2 million), representing a 1.3 percent drop from the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the number of nocturnal stays generated by Swiss visitors increased by 1.3 percent.

FSO indicated that the number of Chinese tourists staying in Swiss hotels registered the biggest decrease in the reviewed period, with 215,000 (down 22.1 percent) fewer stays compared to last year.

Conversely, the number of visitors from the United States registered the largest increase in hotel stays relative to 2015, with an additional 55,000 hotel reservations generated this summer.

The agency also stated that 10 out of 14 Swiss tourist regions reported a downturn in overnight stays in summer this year. Endit
