EP to vote on motions regarding EU-U.S. data protection deal

Xinhua, December 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will vote Thursday on two motions regarding the deal between the European Union (EU) and the United States (U.S.) on the protection of personal data exchanged for law enforcement purposes, it was announced Wednesday.

MEPs will vote on two motions for resolutions seeking a European Court of Justice (COJ) opinion on the compatibility of the EU-U.S. data protection deal, Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, announced.

The two motions for resolutions, tabled by the European United Left/Nordic Green Left group (GUE/NGL) and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe group (ALDE), will directly precede a vote on the EU-U.S. deal.

The agreement aims to ensure high, binding data protection standards for data exchanged between law enforcement authorities for cross border prevention, tracking and prosecution of criminal offences, including terrorist acts.

It has already been signed by the European Commission and the U.S. in June, but requires Parliamentary consent in order to enter into force.

MEPs are scheduled to debate the EU-U.S. data protection agreement on Wednesday evening. Endit
