The following are highlights of South African major news outlets on Tuesday.

-- The rand strengthened the most in almost a month, leading global gains against the dollar, after senior members of the ruling party called for President Jacob Zuma to step down and the country avoided a downgrade from two ratings companies.

The rand climbed as much as 2.8 percent and was 3 percent stronger at 13.73/USD by 12:00, heading for the biggest gain since October 31. (Fin24)

-- President Jacob Zuma has survived a gruelling attack on his leadership from within the ANC's National Executive Committee.

The "surprise" motion by Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom for Zuma to step down or be recalled was defeated. (News24)

-- The ANC National Executive Committee meeting has ended in Irene outside Pretoria after discussing the future of President Jacob Zuma.

The meeting was supposed to end on Sunday but was extended to Monday night after Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom tabled a motion of no confidence in the President. (South African Broadcasting Corporation) Endit
