Spanish King and Queen began a three-day official visit to Portugal on Monday, where they were welcomed by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa with military honors.

In his address, King Filipe VI thanked Portugal for its warm welcome and said Porto was a "city in transformation," during an official ceremony at the northern city's town hall.

"One of the main elements that contribute to that transformation is without doubt the thriving University of Porto and its science and technology park, which we will visit tomorrow, and which makes Porto an entrepreneurial city by excellence, contributing to a dynamic economy and attracting an increasing number of companies," he said.

Mayor of Porto Rui Moreira highlighted the positive relationship Portugal and Spain have maintained during many years, which he hopes will be strengthened through projects related to science and technology.

King Filipe VI and Queen Letizia will be visiting Guimaraes and the Portuguese capital in the next two days. The Spanish King will give a speech at the Portuguese parliament on Wednesday. Endit
