Ukraine indicts ex-president Yanukovych with high treason

Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office said on Monday it has formally indicted former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych with high treason.

The charges, which accuse Yanukovych of involvement in "subversive activities against Ukraine" were delivered to the ex-president by Ukraine's Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko during a video-link testimony, said a statement on the Prosecutor General's website.

During the video questioning that linked Kiev and Russia's southwest city of Rostov-on-Don, Yanukovych appeared as a witness at a trial over the killing of demonstrators during pro-European protests in 2014.

Speaking at the testimony, Yanukovych rejected his alleged involvement in the police attack on protesters, saying he had not given the order for the use of weapons.

In February 2014, over 100 demonstrators were killed during conflicts with police in central Kiev.

Shortly after the incident, Yanukovych left Kiev and the parliament dismissed him, declaring constitutionally unable to carry out his duties.

The protests started in November 2013 after Yanukovych decided to halt the signing of an association agreement with the European Union. Endit
