Frontex to strengthen cooperation with Western Balkans

Xinhua, November 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) on Monday said it has approved the appointment of a Frontex liaison officer in the Western Balkans to further strengthen the cooperation with those outside the EU.

The liaison officer in the region is expected to be appointed in spring 2017 and will be based in Belgrade, Serbia, according to Frontex's press release.

While the responsibility for the management of the external borders remains primarily with the EU members, Frontex supports border control at land, air and sea borders by reinforcing, assessing and coordinating actions of members.

As part of the agency's strategy, Frontex intends to deploy liaison officers to those outside the EU affected by migration flows.

Frontex has deployed a liaison officer in Turkey since April 2016.

Thousands of refugees and migrants who arrived in Greece seek to enter the western Europe through Western Balkan.

In 2015, the region recorded 764,000 detections of illegal border crossings by migrants. Endit
